Happy 2019! I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season. Around this time each year, people talk about resolutions and goals. I won’t beat a dead horse and encourage you to make and keep your own goals this year. We all know we should. So I’ll just share some of my professional goals and leave you to ponder your own.
Well, the new year is starting with a bang for me! I just got a job copy writing for a marketing company here in Dallas. I’m ready and excited for this new challenge!
Does that mean I’m done doing freelance work? Nope. I’m going to keep doing the writing and editing I love for my clients. I just may limit the amount of freelance work I take on. It’s all about balance, right?
So here are my professional goals for this year:
Join a professional writing/editing association or organization.
I’m hoping that I’ll get to attend a conference as well, but that may be wishful thinking for this year. One step at a time, right? Even if I don’t get to attend a conference, I want to participate somehow and network with more people in my field.
Maintain my current relationships with freelance clients.
Even though I’ll need to limit my freelance work, I want to strengthen the relationships I have with my clients by communicating with them on a regular basis (at minimum monthly). And of course, I deliver results as I’ve always done.
Network with other writers and editors more often.
This is connected to joining a professional organization, but networking doesn’t have to be quite that formal. I would like to form relationships with more professionals in my field and create a stronger “village” of people for professional guidance (and for whom I can provide guidance as well). Whether this means a monthly lunch with a nearby writing group or an occasional chat online with a Facebook group, I haven’t quite decided yet. It could be both!
These goals will be worth nothing unless I work toward them all year long. These aren’t “January only” weight loss resolutions. I look forward to reporting successes and lessons learned.
I can’t wait to make 2019 a great year!
