I’m always looking to improve my skills and craft, and I’m always open to valuable advice and criticism because I know that I can progress if I use it. As a freelance writer and editor, I have found hundreds–no, thousands–of resources out there for improving a freelance writing and editing business. Many of them talk about picking and sticking to a niche as one of the first steps.
My past experience with writing and editing has been pretty diverse, ranging from pumping out lighthearted blog posts to preparing deeply technical content. In all my past experience, I haven’t found just one niche I enjoy the most and want to pursue exclusively. So I’ve maintained my generalist nature in writing, which has both served me well and hindered my ability to work with more clients. In not picking a specialty, I’ve been, as some would say, a “jack of all trades but an expert in none,” as the saying goes.
I’ve heard and read this advice to specialize over and over again. I understand and agree with it wholeheartedly. But how can I choose? I love all kinds of topics and kinds of writing. It feels so limiting to specialize, but I know I need to. And I will.
All I need is time and opportunities to explore the possibilities. That means obtaining more opportunities to work with clients on their writing and editing needs. When the right niche(s) comes along, I’m sure I’ll know it’s right. Sounds a lot like finding a soulmate, doesn’t it? As silly as it may seem to some people, picking a niche feels almost as significant to me.
What is your specialty in your career? How did you decide on your niche? Do you have any advice for me in choosing my niche?
